Week In Review no. 2
My favorites from around the web.
I'm writing this roundup on a Saturday. In my pjs. Under a blanket. Because I CAN. Saturdays have long been sacred, in theory, for my little family of 4. But when 2 creative entrepreneurs and freelancers marry each other and have children, the resulting family life decidedly bleeds out from the boxes and schedules we desperately try and cram ourselves into. We're ok with it; predictability in spades = boredom for us, so we embrace the fluctuations and make the best of it all. But our goal has been and will continue to be keeping our Saturdays relatively free of the bustle.
This is one such Saturday, so I'm rounding up my favorites for the week at a leisurely pace while my children play some sci-fi inspired imagination game outside. I know this because they are the loudest humans on planet earth, so I—and the entire neighborhood—can hear their harrowing struggle with some invading dark presence.
Without further ado, my week in review-
Favorite Article:
I came across a fascinating article from Fader that spoke about the interesting link between poor urban planning and the birth of hip-hop. I had never made the correlation before, but this interview with Mike Ford, an architect and designer, shared an interesting perspective on how hip-hop was born and grew from an architectural foundation, but it isn't only about the inception of hip-hop. I really appreciated this article as a homeowner in urban Atlanta, where much revitalization is currently taking place. The fear that revitalization=gentrification is a very real, very rational one, and this article gave me some handles for how to move conversations along as more and more developers continue to show interest in this neighborhood and others like ours.
Favorite Video Giggle:
Last week I shared one of my favorite Aaron Chewning Vine videos. And though I hate to repeat my comedic references, this video SLAYED me this week. Aaron teamed up with John Crist to bring us this gem: How It's Made: Christian Music. You. guys. I cannot. I almost peed myself, I think because it hits so close to what was home for me for 18 years. I hope you can appreciate it as much as I do.

Here lately I have been working to understand what causes a spark in me, the things that make me come alive. Interestingly enough, those things have little to do with what I've been doing as an occupation for a VERY long time. After working in ministry for basically my entire life, I have discovered that I'm happier not working in ministry. Does it mean that ministry is no longer a part of my life? Absolutely not. I'm just finding more joy in it now that it's not my job. This will inevitably not sit well with some (I've already heard & felt some disapproval), but I simply cannot let that reality stifle the good I've seen in me since laying it aside. This Brené Brown quote sums it up perfectly:
"What's the greater risk? Letting go of what people think - or letting go of how I feel, what I believe, and who I am?"
— Brené Brown
Favorite App:
Umkay, I just need to talk for a minute about the LIFESAVER that is 1Password. If you don't know about it, this miracle from heaven is an app that keeps all your passwords, important documents, credit card numbers, etc. for all things ever in one place. You just have one master password that allows you to have access to every password you have. It can categorize as specifically as you'd like, and it'll automatically pull up any website and fill in the appropriate login forms with just one click. It will also generate passwords for you, ones that are tricky and not easily hackable, and then it'll save that login info in your vault. You should really give it a try. My business partners hipped me to this a while back, and now I don't know what I'd do without it. That's it for the Week In Review. Leave a comment and let me know your favorites!
